Windows 10 doesn't currently detect the SoundMax audio card in my HP/Compaq nc6320 laptop. It installed a driver for 'high definition audio' but that didn't work, reporting that the audio service wasn't working. The trouble shooter didn't work out what the problem was either. On my Lenovo 64 bit Thinkcentre M52 after installing w8.1 all I had was 'High Definition Audio' installed and got no sound at all from the speakers.

It said in the sound options the speakers 'were not plugged in' but HDA was working fine, which was incorrect of course as no sound came from the speakers. After a lot of searching I found the answer (on this forum I think but the post was five years old and can't seem to locate it now) I installed Sound Max system and it immediately changed everything and HDA was gone and replaced by soundmax. The speakers now work perfectly and have good sound. My only worry now is, if I upgrade to w10 will it delete Soundmax and revert back to HDA.i hope not, does anyone know?

That interesting that the driver didn't work for you and it worked fine for me on both of my PC's. Try manually installing the audio driver as follows. Go to the device manager and click to expand the sound video and game controllers device manager category.

You should be seeing an HD audio device listed there. Click on that device. Click on the driver tab.

Click on Update driver. Select the Browse my computer for driver software option and browse to the soundmax driver folder that was created when you ran the file. That folder will be located in C: SWSetup sp45615. Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked and see if the driver installs that way. Then restart the PC.

I sure hope the W7 driver works for me again if I have to reinstall W10! OK, here is your problem. I can tell that you installed a video card with an HDMI port because you wrote that you only have a nVidia HD audio device listed there. The nvidia HD audio controls the audio out of the HDMI port on the video card. Here's what happened, and here's what you need to do to correct the problem.

When you installed the nvidia video card with HDMI, the PC not only disabled the onboard video, it also disabled the onboard audio thinking that you also installed an audio card.
